My second hike in Ireland was from Glenmacnass waterfall to Tonelagee. You’ll need high boots & gaiters. This area in wicklow is less than an hour away from Dublin but so undiscovered. Tonelagee and a Heart Shaped Lake: Valentine’s Special. It’s a little hard to get to the lake but not too difficult. Absolutely stunning. Would go again. Best time to climb Before tackling it, you should know that Lough Ouler is located precisely at the foot of the Tonelagee mountain (Tóin le Gaoith). This incredible route is relatively steep at the start and near the summit, but the amazing views make the effort worthwhile.The heart-shaped lake is a rewarding endpoint along this route. I would advise against doing the walk up to Mullaghcleevaun unless very determined and having had several/many days of dry weather (or a good frost) – the walk from Tonalagee up to the peak is very hard going soft peat; you spend most of the timing climbing up and over banks and across the bog, which isn’t that much fun. The descent this way is a far boggier terrain than the ascent on the other side. Return back to the car park along the river. Highly recommended walk. The initial section and the last few hundred metres returning along the river were indeed pretty wet underfoot, but I found the rest of the route to quite dry (apart a few boggy puddles on the path here and there that can easily be avoided) – looks like the dry weather over the last few days/weeks has done the trick.
